Cypress Hills-Grasslands Destination Area
The Client
Cypress Hills-Grasslands Destination Area (CGDA) is a non profit in the tourism sector that works to promote various organizations, places, events, attractions in Southwest Saskatchewan and Southeast Alberta with the goal of getting people to check out the area.
Project Overview
In 2024, the CGDA was looking for photo and video resources to use in marketing content on top of event coverage. As a solution, the Landing Studio offered a social library of both photo and video that the CGDA would be able to pull from for creating marketing content. Four separate shoots were completed at four different locations - Gull Lake, Leader, Maple Creek, and Val Marie. The shoots were scheduled to take place during events happening in these towns in order to show people out in the town, as well as features like shopping and camping.
The photo and video delivered were impacted by the clients intended uses for the product. For example, the client intended to use the photo and videos in social media content and this influenced and how shots were framed and the choice to capture multiple angles so the client would have a variety of shots to choose from. The photo and video delivered were also a result of creative choices we made during shoots, such as using a telephoto lens to get close up shots of people and using wide angles to show grandeur.
We enjoyed seeing the cute downtowns, prairie landscapes, and small town pride, and could feel the overall positive energy during these shoots.
While the resulting photo and video don’t show it, the shoots were not without challenges. One challenge was shooting outdoors in the winter and the summer. In the winter low temperatures are not ideal for our equipment, and in the summer, wasps were a made shooting conditions a bit hazardous. Another challenge was time management. In order to capture events like rodeo contestants where you have a small window of time to get a shot or miss it entirely, it’s important to be ready. Additionally, in regards to time management, it was important to manage time effectively to be able to capture a broad range of images.
Although the ultimate purpose of this project was to capture images and video that the CGDA would be able to use for marketing purposes, for the Landing Studio this project also offered a unique opportunity to experience small town Saskatchewan ourselves. We enjoyed seeing the cute downtowns, prairie landscapes, and small town pride, and could feel the overall positive energy during these shoots. exploring these local gems was great experience, and we hope the images delivered conveying the essence and charm of these small town communities in Southwest Saskatchewan.
